Direct Provision - The Government White Paper

Ireland's Direct Provision system has been one of the more recent chapters in our history of housing minorities in institutional settings. Last October, the report of the Advisory Group on provision of support including accommodation to people in the international protection process was published. This was followed in February by the publication of a Government White Paper proposing to phase out the Direct Provision system by the end of 2024.
Catherine Day, who chaired the Advisory Group, discussed how they reached their findings, the values and principles they adopted, and detail the proposals. Catherine is a former Secretary General of the European Commission.
Jody Clarke, from the UN Refugee agency UNHCR, responded to the paper.
